Pick Your Poison

These colorful objects are both visually appealing, and at the same time dangerously intriguing. Though they look beautiful and harmless, nothing could be further from the truth. The work features a cocktail of primary greenhouse gases mixed with lethal chemicals, topped with a hint of irony. Mankind has always gravitated towards danger. Instant death or painful decline, what is your poison of choice?

Dimethylcadmium is a volatile organic compound. It absorbs instantly into the bloodstream and rips apart the organs that need the highest Asupply of blood, including the heart and the lungs. A very small amount is instantly lethal.

Thioacetone is not actually poisonous or volatile. However, it’s stench is so bad that it will make you vomit your guts out uncontrollably. Moreover, it can be smelled from half a mile away: Pretty potent stuff.

Carbon Dioxide is a chemical compound we encounter every day. In fact we expel it in each breath we take. It is also the best known greenhouse gas, which has risen steadily in our atmosphere mainly due to burning fossil fuels, causing global warming and climate change as well as ocean acidification.

Nitrogen Dioxide and nitric oxide form the nitrogen oxides that are most relevant for air pollution. These gases contribute to the formation of smog, tropospheric ozone and acid rain, harming sensitive ecosystems. At higher temperatures it is a reddish-brown gas with a pungent, nasty odor.

Methane is an odorless and mostly colorless gas. Methane is the primary contributor to the formation of ground-level ozone, a hazardous air pollutant and powerful greenhouse gas. Methane has accounted for roughly 30 % of global warming since pre-industrial times.

Chlorine Trifluoride is a colorless, poisonous, corrosive and extremely volatile gas. It will react explosively with almost anything and combust many otherwise non-flammable materials without any ignition source. This gas condenses into a pail green-yellow liquid.

Nitrous Oxide is commonly known as laughing gas, due to the euphoric effects upon inhaling it. At room temperature, it is a non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet scent and taste. Nitrous Oxide is a major stratospheric ozone depleting substance, with an impact comparable to that of CFCs.
